Dolce Gabbana advert was pulled

This advert was pulled by the fashion label Dolce & Gabbana following accusations in several countries that it glamourised violence against women. The Spanish Government, together with a consumers' association, were the first to publicly decry the ad. However, the initial response from the Italian label was to defend their use of such imagery and instead brand Spain "a bit behind the times". Increasing pressure from the Spanish authorities eventually resulted in Dolce & Gabba stating that they would no longer advertise in the country.

The advert soon after attracted critcism in Italy, and, following an investigation by the IAP, the Italian regulatory authority, was banned. According to the IAP, the ad "offended the dignity of the woman, in the sense that the feminine figure is shown in a degrading manner...Because of the passive and helpless position of the woman relative to the men around her, (the image constitutes a) representation of abuse and (condones) the idea of violence towards her."

As a result of the growing controversy, Dolce & Gabbana made the decision to withdraw the ad worldwide. However, the designers continued to defend their choice of imagery, saying, "We want to reaffirm that the image does not represent rape or violence, but if one had to give an interpretation of the picture, it could recall an erotic dream, a sexual game...It was never our purpose to cause any controversy and instigate violence against women."
